Retractable thrusters are generally installed in sail boats that have insufficient depth of hull on the bow for traditional bow thrusters to work effectively. They can also be fitted to the aft section of sail boats.
The SR series of retractable thruster are the most recent addition to the side-power thruster range and are ideal for boats where traditional thrusters are unsuitable. The SR thrusters deploy and retract straight out of the hull quickly and seamlessly, creating minimal drag and giving maximum control.

The SR range of thrusters also include many of the advanced features from the SE series of tunnel thrusters, but are consequently more expensive than standard thrusters as there are moving components and installation is more complicated.
